Mailbox size and sending limits

Mailbox size

Each email account has a mailbox size (quota), which you set when you create it. All your email together also counts towards your hosting account's disk space.

To check or change an account's mailbox size:

  1. Log in to DirectAdmin.
  2. Go to E-Mail Manager and click E-Mail Accounts. Each account's usage is shown in the list.
  3. Select an account to change its mailbox size.

When a mailbox is full

New email is rejected and the sender receives a "mailbox full" message. To make room:

  • empty the Trash and spam folders
  • delete old emails with large attachments, which you can find by sorting by size in webmail
  • check your Sent folder, which often grows unnoticed
  • archive old email to your computer with an app such as Outlook or Thunderbird
  • increase the mailbox size, if your disk space allows

Sending limits

To protect the reputation of our mail servers, your hosting account can send up to 300 emails per hour. If you reach the limit, further emails are rejected until the hourly limit resets.

For newsletters or bulk email, use an email marketing service instead. If you expect to send an unusual volume of legitimate email, tell us in advance and we'll advise. See Why your emails are going to spam.

Signs an account may be compromised

  • you reach your sending limit without sending many emails
  • you receive bounce messages for emails you didn't send
  • people tell you they've received strange emails from you

If this happens, change the account's password straight away, check your devices for malware and open a Technical Support ticket so we can check the account.
