Connecting with FTP (FileZilla)

FTP lets you transfer files between your computer and your hosting with an FTP program. It's the quickest way to upload a large website or many files. We recommend FileZilla, which is free for Windows, macOS and Linux.

Connection settings

Setting Value
Protocol FTP - File Transfer Protocol
Host Your server hostname from your welcome email
Port 21
Encryption Use explicit FTP over TLS if available
Logon type Normal
User Your DirectAdmin username or the full username of an extra FTP account
Password The password for that login

Connecting with FileZilla

  1. Open FileZilla and go to File > Site Manager > New site.
  2. Enter the settings above and click Connect.
  3. If FileZilla asks you to trust the server's certificate, check that it shows your server hostname, then accept it.
  4. Your computer's files are on the left and your hosting is on the right. Your website is in domains/yourdomain.com/public_html.

Creating extra FTP accounts

Extra FTP accounts are included with Rise and Roar. Spark has one FTP login, which is your DirectAdmin username.

Create separate FTP accounts for other people, such as a web designer, so you don't need to share your DirectAdmin password.

  1. Log in to DirectAdmin.
  2. Go to Account Manager and click FTP Management.
  3. Create a new FTP account with a username and strong password.
  4. Choose what the account can reach. Use a custom folder to limit it to one website or folder.

Extra accounts log in with their full username, for example designer@yourdomain.com. Delete the account when it's no longer needed.

Connection problems

Problem What to try
530 Login incorrect Check the password. For extra accounts, use the full username, including @yourdomain.com.
Connection timed out Make sure passive mode is on (FileZilla's default). Some networks block FTP, so try another network.
Certificate warning Use your server hostname as the host, not your domain or IP address.
Blocked after several attempts Our security system may have blocked your IP address. See Logging in to the Client Area and DirectAdmin.
