A domain pointer lets another domain you own lead to your main website. It's useful if you've registered similar domains (such as yourbusiness.my and yourbusiness.com.my) and want them all to reach the same site.
Alias or redirect?
| Type |
What visitors see |
Best for |
| Redirect |
The browser moves to your main domain |
Most websites. Search engines see one address, which is better for your search ranking. |
| Alias |
Your website, with the extra domain still in the address bar |
Special cases where the extra domain must stay visible |
Adding a domain pointer
- Point the extra domain to PaduHost first. See Pointing your domain to PaduHost.
- Log in to DirectAdmin.
- Go to Account Manager and click Domain Pointers.
- If you have more than one domain, choose the main domain the pointer should lead to.
- Enter the extra domain.
- Tick Create as an Alias only if you want an alias. Leave it unticked for a redirect.
- Create the pointer.
It can take a few hours for the pointer to start working, depending on DNS.
Good to know
- The extra domain needs its own SSL certificate to work over
https://. See Free SSL certificates (Let's Encrypt).
- If you want the extra domain to have its own separate website, add it as a domain instead. See Adding another domain to your hosting.
- Domain Pointers are included with Roar. Spark and Rise don't include them, so the option isn't shown. To use one, upgrade to Roar. See Upgrading or downgrading your hosting plan.
