PHP is the programming language that runs most websites, including WordPress. You can choose which PHP version your account uses and change settings such as the memory limit and maximum upload size.
Use the newest version your website supports. We recommend PHP 8.3 or newer for most websites, including WordPress. PHP versions older than 8.2 no longer receive security updates. Before switching, check that your theme, plugins and any custom code support the new version.
The change takes effect almost immediately and applies to all websites on your account. Check your website afterwards. If anything breaks, switch back to the previous version.
Some software needs extra PHP extensions, such as ioncube_loader or imagick. On the same page, open Extensions, tick the ones you need and save.
Open Options to change settings such as:
| Setting | What it controls |
|---|---|
memory_limit |
The maximum memory a single script can use |
upload_max_filesize |
The largest file you can upload |
post_max_size |
The largest form submission, including uploads. Set it the same as or higher than upload_max_filesize. |
max_execution_time |
How long a script can run, in seconds |
max_input_vars |
How many form fields a page can send, which matters for large menus and page builders |
Choose a value from the list and it's saved straight away. The highest values available depend on your plan.
Can't change the options? If your account is on the native PHP version, choose a numbered version first. The native version can't be changed.
