Managing DNS records in DirectAdmin

DNS records tell the internet where to find your website, where to deliver your email and how to verify your domain with other services. If your domain uses PaduHost's nameservers, you manage its DNS records in DirectAdmin.

If your domain uses another provider's nameservers, such as Cloudflare, manage your DNS records there instead.

Opening DNS Management

  1. Log in to DirectAdmin.
  2. Go to Account Manager and click DNS Management.
  3. If you have more than one domain, choose the domain you want to manage.

Common record types

Type What it does Example use
A Points a name to an IPv4 address Your website
AAAA Points a name to an IPv6 address Your website over IPv6
CNAME Points a name to another name shop pointing to an online store provider
MX Says which server receives your email Using Google Workspace or Microsoft 365
TXT Holds text for other services to read SPF, DKIM, DMARC and domain verification
CAA Says which certificate authorities can issue SSL certificates Extra SSL security

Adding a record

  1. In DNS Management, click Add Record.
  2. Choose the record type.
  3. Enter the name. For a subdomain, enter just the first part, such as shop for shop.yourdomain.com. For your domain on its own, enter your full domain followed by a full stop, such as yourdomain.com.
  4. Enter the value your provider gave you.
  5. Leave the TTL as it is unless your provider says otherwise, then save.

The full stop rule

When a name or value is a full hostname, end it with a full stop, for example shops.example-provider.com. Without the full stop, DirectAdmin adds your own domain to the end, so the record points to the wrong place.

Editing or deleting records

  • Take a note of a record's current value before you change or delete it, so you can put it back if needed.
  • Don't delete the NS records or the default A and MX records unless you know what they do. They keep your website and email working.

New records usually work within a few minutes. Changes to existing records can take up to the record's TTL to reach everyone. See How long DNS changes take to work.
